Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract rational numbers. (This should focus on positive and negative fractions and decimals)
Is adding or subtracting rational numbers different from adding or subtracting other types of numbers? Rational numbers are numbers that can be written in fraction form (or its decimal equivalent), and can either be positive or negative.
In the activity, Adding and Subtracting Rational Numbers, students learn that they can combine the rules for adding and subtracting fractions and decimals with those for adding and subtracting numbers with positive and negative signs, in order to add or subtract rational numbers. Students are presented with models to help them find equivalent rational numbers, and to help them add and subtract numbers with signs. They also use addition and subtraction number properties that make it easier to simplify these expressions.
