There may be no substitute for hard work, but there can be a substitute for x or y.

Students will practice solving systems of equations using the substitution method in this activity. They will begin by seeing an ordered pair as a solution to a pair of linear equations on a coordinate grid and explore how the x and y values relate to the equation. From here students will practice replacing expressions and variables with equivalent ones to solve systems of linear equations. Students will continue their practice exploring each step of this method in detail. Keep up the hard work…and leave the substitution to the variables.
