In addition to approaching integer subtraction through adding the opposite, we now have an integer subtraction activity that involves the use of a vertical number line. This document is great for those students who benefit from using visual models to help them develop algorithms.

Using the vertical number line, students explore which values, positive or negative, must be subtracted in order to make a hovercraft rise up or sink down into the sea.

The interactive model is used to build an understanding of how “adding the opposite” works.

Throughout the remainder of this document students are reminded that they can “think about the hovercraft model” as they evaluate the difference between two integers.
