The new Absolute Value document begins with a quick visual of two girls walking on a number line followed by the related standard notation to get students understanding the concept and notation of absolute value.
Selection and ordering questions further test students’ understanding of the concepts.
The applications of absolute value on pages 6-9 allow students to experience how the placement of absolute value bars affects the resulting sum or difference of two integers. Once students complete these pages, a great opportunity exists for exploring situations in which the sum is the same like, |-7| + |-2| = |-7 + -2| and when it is different, like |-7| + |2| = |-7 + 2|. Students could then present their findings to the class.
