Success with integer addition can easily translate into success with integer subtraction! In Integer Subtraction by Adding the Opposite, students rewrite each subtraction expression as an equivalent addition expression. Then they apply their knowledge of integer addition to find the solution. Since the first four pages focus on identifying and writing equivalent addition expressions, students can move directly into this lesson from integer addition, with little or no previous exposure to integer subtraction.
Throughout the remainder of the document students have the opportunity to apply the “adding the opposite” strategy to find integer differences. Though it could be used for whole class instruction, this is a good document to let the students try on their own.
